That was the battle cry of Georgia Bulldogs' fans from Knoxville to Lexington to Jacksonville to Auburn to New Orleans during the 1980 football season. Georgia, picked in pre-season polls to finish as low as 7th in the Southeastern Conference and as high as 16th in the nation, methodically marched through a schedule of 11 regular season opponents and defied terrifying odds by whipping Notre Dame 17-10 in the Sugar Bowl to emerge as undisputed National Champions. As a result, Georgia finished with an unblemished 12-0 record-the only major college to accomplish such a feat that season.
Coming off a uncharacteristic 6-5 won-loss record in 1979, Georgia entered the 1980 campaign with question marks at several key positions. The Bulldogs had no established tailback; little depth along the offensive line; a lack of speed at linebacker and in the secondary and little experience at defensive end. The challenge for legendary head coach Vince Dooley was mighty, but he was up to the task, orchestrating a perfect season in this, his 17th year at Georgia. For his efforts, he was named SEC and National Coach of The Year by every major poll.
It's not really a monumental accomplishment to win a national championship when you're decidedly bigger, stronger and deeper than the opposition. But this cast of "Dooley's Dogs" did not do it that way. They were not physically superior to many of their opponents. But they blended talent with team unity, heart, soul and grit to win games and produce this juggernaut.
Many opponents throughout the season led the Bulldogs in various statistical categories (yardage, first downs, passing yards, time of possession, etc.), except where it counted the most-on the scoreboard. Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator Erskine Russell directed an opportunistic bunch of "Junkyard Dogs" who would bend, but not break. They had the uncanny ability to "hunker down" when they needed to the most against teams like Tennessee, Clemson, South Carolina, Auburn and Notre Dame with game-saving defensive plays. And Offensive Coordinator George Haffner directed a balanced attack that could produce points by the quick play or the grind-it-out style.
Magical may be the most prevalent word in the Georgia lexicon when it comes to describing the 1980 Bulldogs, who claimed their fourth National Championship, eighth SEC title and made their 20th Bowl appearance. Hail to Georgia Down in Dixie and Glory, Glory to Old Georgia!
There's no doubt-the 1980 season will long live in the memory of all Georgia fans and is one that we will fondly recall.
